Fighting hunger from the ground up

Opportunity

Project Bread is a Boston-based nonprofit that fights food insecurity in underserved
communities throughout Massachusetts. The organization is the intermediary between individuals and the state, helping people access Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and ensure dignified access to food.

But while Project Bread’s mission has always been clear, the organization’s communications and marketing plan anything but. The website was outdated.  A confusing sign-up process necessitated a costly and inefficient in-house call center. And the organization had to better communicate the necessity and urgency of both its work and SNAP benefits to ensure continued funding for people desperately in need. It came to Yes& for answers.

Insight

The individuals and communities served by Project Bread often face multiple challenges beyond food insecurity: they struggle with issues of child care and medical costs costs, housing insecurity, and language and accessibility.  Our goal was to humanize the need—and end the stigma around asking for help.

Solution

Yes&’s total brand overhaul included a new color palette and logo; an entirely new, mobile-first website that made signing up for benefits easy— eliminating the need for a costly call center. We even updated materials for government presentations.

The “&”

We knew that If individuals couldn’t understand how to get help, the cycle of hunger would never end. We focused on creating inclusive messaging that could be translated colloquially into 8 languages.

the Results

Now Project Bread has all the communications resources it needs to fulfill its role  as an essential community partner in fighting food insecurity in Massachusetts.
