AI-Powered Marketing: Tools, Trends, and Tactics You Can’t Ignore

By Chrissie Koeppen

I remember the moment it hit me. Rewind to 2022.

A client launched a campaign they were super proud of—great strategy, strong creative, backed by data. We were brought in to do the analysis.

And while I was used to delivering hard truths, this one was a tough pill to swallow for all of us. The results? Flat.

We now call this the alligator effect: Click-through rates dropped, while engagement metrics — like time on site, bounce rate, and scroll depth — spiked in all the wrong places. The jaws were opening. Users were curious but not converting. The usual tactics just weren’t working like they used to.

Around the same time, my team and I were dabbling with AI tools; part curiosity, part experimentation. I asked ChatGPT to write a few CTAs. They weren’t perfect but they were surprisingly close. Then we ran a predictive model to optimize email timing. Better open rates. Better conversions. Then a chatbot we built started answering customer questions more clearly than the website.

That’s when I knew: AI wasn’t just a shiny new tool.

Our Experiential VP said it best: “Fasten your seatbelts, folks. We’re in a new era.” She couldn’t have been more right.

By the time AI went mainstream in late 2022, we were already shifting. We stopped talking about SEO as the endgame…or even as “search engine optimization” at all. We started calling it search everywhere optimization

We stopped assuming audiences would follow a funnel. Instead, we asked:

  • What do they need right now?
  • Where are they asking?
  • What’s the best possible answer?

AI hasn’t replaced marketers. But it has reshaped what it means to be one.

If you feel like the ground has shifted beneath your feet, you’re not alone.

Here are seven ways AI has transformed digital marketing—and what we’ve learned along the way.

So what changed?

By late 2022, AI wasn’t just something tech teams were geeking out over—it was everywhere. ChatGPT, Bard, DALL·E… they made headlines. But behind the scenes, AI had already started quietly reshaping how we market.

Campaigns got smarter.
Content got faster.
Search stopped being about keywords and started being about answers.

And audiences? They noticed. They started expecting more—more relevance, more speed, more them in everything we delivered.

AI didn’t just change how we market. It changed what people expect from marketers

Indeed, AI in its infancy feels a lot like the Wild West. It also feels like a secret train already closing its doors with only a few passengers who were lucky enough to know when and where to catch it. It feels overwhelming and unwieldy. Can this new-to-the-masses technology truly help us, and, if so, how?

7 Ways AI Has Reshaped Digital Marketing

1. Personalization Got Real

There was a time when “personalization” meant inserting a first name in an email subject line. Today, AI parses browsing behavior, purchase patterns, location, and even tone preferences. It doesn’t just segment—it speaks directly. At scale.

2. Content Creation Grew a New Brain

Blogs, social captions, product descriptions, scripts—AI can help you generate it all. It’s about increasing speed, maintaining consistency, and freeing up human creativity to do what machines can’t.

3. Search Isn’t…Search Anymore

People don’t want links. They want answers. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT’s browser mode, and Perplexity have moved us beyond Search Engine Optimization. Welcome to the world of Answer Engine Optimization. Which is all industry speak for “skip the fluff and give me the answer.”

4. Ditch the Guesswork

AI turns your data into insight—and insight into action. We’re talking real-time dashboards, predictive modeling, and smarter attribution. That means fewer guesses and more confident decisions.

5. Conversations Don’t Sleep

AI chatbots can now handle support, qualify leads, and even convert, all without losing the human touch (if trained well). The magic isn’t just automation. It’s empathy at scale.

6. Ethics Moved to the Front Row

We’ve entered a new era of risk. Deepfakes, misinformation, and bias can all creep in. That’s why the smartest marketers are building AI governance into their brand playbooks now — not later.

7. Marketing Teams Are Being Reimagined

We’ve redefined roles. Writers are now prompt engineers. Analysts are now AI trainers. The marketers who thrive tomorrow won’t be the ones with the flashiest tools. They’ll be the ones who know how to use AI with intention.

And No—It’s Not All Sunshine and Rainbows

(But, ever optimistic, I’d love to believe it is). Yes, AI is powerful. But it’s not perfect.

We’ve seen firsthand how it can amplify bad data, burn out audiences with content overload, and go wildly off-brand without the right guardrails.

We’ve also seen how teams can get stuck chasing shiny tools instead of focusing on what moves the needle…and saves them time and effort.

Here’s what we’ve learned:
The best marketers aren’t trying to use every AI tool—they’re trying to create better experiences.

AI is the accelerant. The human strategy still matters.

What This All Means for Your Marketing Strategy

If you’re still treating AI like a shiny add-on, it’s time to rethink.

AI should be embedded across your entire marketing lifecycle:

  • Planning campaigns with predictive insights
  • Personalizing content in real time
  • Optimizing search and social for human behavior (and machine logic)
  • Automating workflows, freeing up creative time
  • Listening to signals—then acting fast

Technology is the engine. People are the drivers.
Digital transformation may start with AI, automation, and new tools—but it succeeds because of people.

It’s a dance between human intuition and machine precision. And it only works when teams are agile, curious, and accountable. Technology can accelerate change, but mindset makes it meaningful.
